Chapter nineteen

Elite

“Congratulations,” Captain Velkin said as he stepped inside the command pavilion, a week after the destruction of our base. “You three seem to be the sole survivors of the greatest military disaster in Straland History.”

We stood up, but Velkin immediately waved his hand and told us to take our seats. The three of us were Deacon, myself, and a warrior named Lyselia. She was pale with long black hair, tied up in rings with a soot-stained white bow to keep it off her shoulders. I didn’t know much about her other than that Analyze said she had an Energy level of 162. While she was another survivor, we’d managed to stay hidden and hadn’t encountered each other until now.

Velkin pulled a nearby stool and sat down on it. There weren’t many other furnishings in the pavilion. The pavilion itself had been put up by a handful of soldiers who had arrived with several carts of equipment just ahead of Velkin less than an hour ago. We were on a wooded plateau less than a mile from the destroyed base.

The captain continued. “This dubious honor grants you an even more dubious reward of being stationed here for at least another six months. First of all, effective immediately, the three of you have been reassigned to the 17th Irregular Troop, of the newly created 9th Company. I’m Captain Gareth Velkin, and I will be acting as company commander in addition to other duties. Until your new lieutenant arrives in the next day or so, I will also be your acting troop commander. Before you ask, we are part of internal security. A single company will be stationed along the Frontier, and our primary task is reconnaissance, not defense.”

No one else asked, so I did. “Um, why not? We just had an attack that wiped out twelve hundred soldiers.”

“I cannot speak for the generals, but personally, I don’t wish to lose another twelve hundred soldiers. We were intended to be a company under the 6th Brigade. While we are unattached now, our mission is the same. We believe the monsters are being organized and controlled, and we are to identify and locate those responsible.”

Perhaps emboldened, Deacon asked. “You mean the Queen of Monsters, sir?”

“That is also in the realm of speculation, Sergeant.”

“But Holt and I saw her,” he said.

Velkin raised an eyebrow. “Holt?”

“We met a girl from Earth,” I said, not looking at Deacon. “I believe she is a powerful Spark who didn’t seem very concerned about the monsters.”

“We saw the tracks, Holt,” Deacon said.

“As far as we know, she saved us from them. She talked to us, and then she left. That is all we know.”

Deacon crossed his arms and frowned. I stared at the hard ground. After what we’d endured, Deacon was the closest thing I had to a friend in this world. It felt like I’d just betrayed him. Especially since I knew he was probably right.

However, we were talking about Ashley Corr. Cheerleader. Organizer of food drives. Sweet, cute, perky, and loved by everyone according to the news.
